Q & A

What is Springs Alive?  Is it a school, a community, the name of a town, or a religious group?

Springs Alive (SPA) is a non-profit association registered with the registrar of companies in the ministry of Justice-Uganda. The organization is also registered with Wakiso District Administration-community Development Office; as a CBO (community Based Organization); reg.no.WCBO/934/06

How did it come into being?  Who was behind the concept? What is the history of Springs Alive?

Springs Alive is a result of having found and actually seen that there was great need for social services by the people in the community of sebbi-lugeye where the organization’s headquarters are based.

SPA came up to join other organizations and close the gap between government and the people at the grass roots. In the past, SPA can be described as a good gesture (only needing to be supported-given its catchment area i.e. a war zone formerly known as Luweero Triangle-since 1986).

Because of government’s Decentralization of responsibilities from the centre to the lower centres of responsibilities, this has created a lot of need for efficient, effective and affordable service delivery.

SPA VISION STATEMENT:

To improve the quality of life and services of people where duty calls, through the philosophy of partnership, consultation, research, voluntarisms, local contributions as well as participatory action by stake holders; which is needed to enable the service receivers get satisfaction from effective, efficient and affordable service delivery.

ORGANISATION’S MISSION STATEMENT : dedicated to providing services that will see the underpriviledged in our society achieve their goals of a better and peaceful life.

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE: (The organogram  shows who reports to whom, including the policy body e.g. the Board)

How is the government involved in the community?  Funding, school accreditation?

Gov’t recognises us but has not yet given us any support, this is shown by the way we interact with the local government even as per their previous recommendations ;see letters attached

How many people live within the Springs Alive Community?  How does Springs Alive coexist with the traditional village life? Is there cooperation?

The population which needs this type of service is over 10,000 people with around 3,000 households in its immediate neighbourhood.

We teach children at a very low rate & most times free, the fee is insufficient to cater for the teacher’s payments. We improvise for provision of clothes & uniforms for those who come almost naked, sometimes we give them something to eat/drink. Other children come from areas with impassable roads, we work hand –in – hand with the community to clear the roads, make bridges and repair unprotected wells/springs.Further, given the kind of history the people in our community have undergone ie.people dying as a result of civil wars, diseases, poverty, illiteracy etc the people here are used to problems. They tend not to be so mindful of any help that may be availed, whether children are studying or not and in many cases they have encountered empty promises from some visitors who come to their community. SPA tries to address community’s actual needs.

Can you describe the how orphans find their way to Springs Alive?

We walk through the villages & we talk to the guardians, neighbours of children who do not stay with any mature person & we encourage these people to see to it that they bring these children to SPA children’s centre, others join on their own. They later undergo a registration process with the children’s centre.

How many people are employed by Springs Alive and what are their roles in the organization?

There are people who work with Springs Alive (Education division) and some stay at the centre, work on voluntary basis and they are 8 in number. They are engaged in teaching, community sensitization

Who manages the financial affairs of the organization?

The chairman coordinates most of the financial issues although when it comes to accountability purposes we have a committee consisting of the chairman, General secretary and Treasury; to this we one add an interest party.

What asset does Springs Alive own?  Property, land, equipment?

Land,2 houses(one for residential & another for class), children ranging from Baby class, middle and Top(Nursery section),then primary I,2,3,4-5 & goodwill

What percent of the land is used for agriculture?  Is Springs able to raise crops to feed residents?

Much as the land is there we have no means of doing agriculture and given SPA goodwill the possibility is there to raise crops to feed not only residents but even children at the centre

Does Springs Alive have a religious affiliation?  Are there any links to mission work or foreign aid?  Do you have religious leadership on site?

We want to with a Christian bias but we don not have.

Does you community have any special celebrations such as a founders day or a particular way to welcome a new child?

This is mostly done on personal basis, mainly because we have no capacity to handle as a community.

What are SPA values?

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

Springs alive is being developed through a system of bottom up planning as regards major issues that affect the community. Regular meetings of the promoters and the community, which includes different groups of people beneficiaries, guardians, and partners where problems and opinions are discussed, as the basis of planning. This creates an upward and downward flow of information, opinions, and decisions. These groups, being the major beneficiaries, are part and parcel of the planning process of the project. Their participation in discussion of issues concerning them enables the enhancement and sustenance of the project.

The target community will always be involved in problem identification/needs assessment, prioritizing the needs and coming up with possible solutions/plans to address the identified problems.

MAINSTREAMING GENDER

Women hold high responsibilities in the family and community, but have traditionally not received the same opportunities like their male counterparts. Women face a lot of barriers that hinder their full participation in the community. For many years the girl child and the women in general has suffered social cultural constraints, which presuppose the supremacy of males in society, besides biological. There are still many factors that limit their participation in public activities. These include low priority in education, heavy domestic responsibilities forced early marriages, deliberate barring from school and demand for girl-child labour, low self esteem.

Springs alive gives both male and female members of the community the same opportunities. This will enable them to appropriately prepare for their rightful roles and responsibilities in society, including caring for families, but also making them economically sound and health wise.

OTHERS

Other values include Christian values like respecting the dignity of each person and treating each person with love, compassion and justice; maintaining a high standard of professional competency, ethics and effectiveness.
